July timeline
RotaKids care about local older people – 30 RotaKids from Abbey Primary School and Shaftesbury Primary School undertook visits to three local care homes this week. They visited Cedars Lodge, John Shoobridge Court and St Denis Lodge. The young people played games, danced and chatted with the residents. They also took artworks they had produced to be left and displayed in the homes.
It was clear that all those involved, both young and old, found the visits interesting and fun. Staff at the homes were keen to stress that they would welcome further such visits in the future.
RotaKids is a programme for local primary schools aimed at supporting the local community and run by Shaftesbury Rotary Club.
8th July – We met for a speaker meeting but were pleased before our talk to induct a new member. Steve Russell has moved into our area and was until recently President of Fordingbridge Rotary. Steve is a local plumber. We look forward to working with him in the future. If like Steve you would also like to join, or even just learn something about Rotary then visit us on-line at https://shaftesburyrotaryclub.org/ We then had a talk from James Thrift who is the local representative of the William Williams charity. https://www.williamwilliams.org.uk
We learnt about the history of the charity, but more especially about how they can help people in need in our area, as well as supporting local organisations in funding specific projects. The other principal area in which they can provide assistance is funding to support local persons of any age in further education.
We are happy to have recently worked with the charity to jointly fund a number of young persons in our town attending a young carers weekend na d look forward to working with The William Williams in the future.
12th July – The Boobs quiz promoted by Shaftesbury Masonic Lodge and Shaftesbury Rotary raised £700 for the local Boobs charity. 14 teams of six endured eight rounds of gruelling questions including anagrams, photos and a live music round. The “Quizzards” stole the win half a point ahead of The Town ‘T’winners and Rotary Vice President Andy Cole, closely followed by Enmore United in third. A most enjoyable evening for a good cause. Thanks to Alan & Hazel Kerr for their hard work putting the evening together and all those who helped along the way.
22nd July, Business as usual, preceded by Club Council meeting. A discussion on forthcoming social events, Community activities and Fund raising opportunities. i.e. Sunday Lunch at The Foresters, Skittles evening at The Crown, Wincanton Races, Halloween Walk, Shoe boxes, Twinning Visit and Bingo Night in the coming months.
We welcomed another new member into the Club, Robert Blackman, Manager at Bramley Home Care and resident of Tisbury. We also had the pleasure of presenting a Paul Harris Award to retiring President Peter Sale, a Rotarian of many years, who has led the formation of RotaKids in Shaftesbury amongst other initiatives.
