June 2024

10th June – Our first meeting this month and we have already been busy with a presentation cheque to BOOBS; and sponsoring three teenagers on a weekend organised by Rotary District for Young Carers, as well as Kids Out next week at Longleat.

Our speaker this evening was Phil Martin of Phil’s Epic Ride with his support driver and friend Ian, who kept us all quiet for 30 minutes, while they told of their journey of 1,300 miles, via the Johnson’s depots.  They raised over £40,000 for Children with Cancer

The Kids Out visit to Longleat was a great success with over 100 children and 50 carers from The Dorset Centre of Excellence and Yewstock School taking part. The day was sponsored by Shaftesbury, Gillingham and Sturminster Newton Rotary Clubs. Kids Out has been running since 1990 and nationally visits over 100 venues every year.

President’s Night, 13th June 2024

Over 20 of us gathered at Sorelle in Motcombe on a chilly and damp evening to celebrate President Peter’s year in office.  Tim Cook did an excellent job of choosing a new and very convivial venue for this event.  Many thanks Tim!

After welcome drinks, we enjoyed two Italian courses sat at a long rustic table – we could have been in Italy (apart from the weather!)

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Honorary Membership to Michael Salisbury, Head Teacher at Abbey Primary School.  This membership recognises Michael’s dedication to supporting the school’s RotaKids Club, as well as the support he has given to Shaftesbury Rotary Club.  Steve Parsons, District Governor Nominee, made the presentation, noting Michael’s exceptional commitment.

29th June  – Gillingham Rotary President’s Night – Our President Peter and Muriel joined Rotarians from Gillingham Club, families and friends for the President’s Night at The King’s Arms, East Stour.  The pub prepared an excellent barbeque and the music played as we sat in the garden.  They were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed chatting to many different people.  Muriel won a super prize in the raffle, topping off a very pleasant evening.

Thanks to Gillingham Club for the invitation.  Congratulations to Pat Kenyon on completing his Presidential Year and best wishes to John Kilcourse, President in the coming year.
