3rd – Rotary Chef 2018

The District Final was held on Saturday March 3rd at South Downs College, Waterlooville, Hampshire and Lorna Hillier from Shaftesbury School was sponsored by Shaftesbury Rotary Club.

5th – No meeting

12th – Rotary Dorset Cycle Ride

We were joined for a pleasant evening by David King to speak about various aspects of the Rotary Dorset Cycle Ride.

David became involved in the event when a member of Rotary Club of Wareham. The event was previously run by Cancer Research direct, but Rotary took over the reins when the charity could not manage anymore.

Whilst David is not presently a member of Rotary he retains his role as lead organiser under the umbrella of Rotary Club of Westbourne who have now taken on the event.

Rotary Dorset Cycle Ride takes place every September starting and finishing near Wareham and has eight routes for riders to choose from up to 108 miles! Normally the longer rides travel east to west, but in 2017 (due to a clash with the Ironman competition in Weymouth) this longer route travelled north to south topping out in Shaftesbury. A number of our members were happy to help with marshalling and running a drink stop.

David and his team has managed the ride for six years raising in excess of £200,000 – an amazing result and an ambitious target for our baby event!

All listened intently while David gave us some useful background into successfully running such an event, particularly the advantage of utilising todays social media. All our members nodded sagely. Was it an interested acknowledgement of this valuable advice…..or were some just waking up?

19th – Business Meeting

The council minutes for February were acknowledged and a revue of grant applications. Full details can be seen in the April Council minutes on the members page.

24th – A Day at the Races

28 Rotarians wives and partners along with some of our business partners enjoyed a fun day at Wincanton race course Starting with a pre- lunch drink followed by an excellent 3 course meal and wine we were in the mood to enjoy the atmosphere, racing and fellowship. We were fortunate that we had a professional jockey who came and gave a hilarious talk about what goes on both on and off the track. Nobody “lost their shirt” and those who did well kept quiet about it. A big thank you to Richard who organised the event which is planned to be repeated next year or sooner.

26th – Speaker, Steve Uden

Steve Uden’s career began in the Royal Marines where he served for 9 years, mainly in a military intelligence capacity. He saw active service in Northern Ireland and left the corps in 1975.

Studied fine art and graphics at Plymouth college of art as a mature student and received a diploma in art and design. Moved to Northampton for a job as designer with Unilever packaging division and within 7 years was regional art and design manager. In 1987 formed design packaging ltd and ran it successfully until 2009 when he sold it as a going concern and retired, eventually moving to Dorset in 2017.
