1st August – No meeting

Speaker’s Evening – 8th August

Locally known as Jan and Pam, they are of course the two lovely ladies who own and run “Glad Rags” the costume and fancy dress shop just outside of Shaftesbury. Pam’s part of the talk took us back to when she was 4 years old and had a natural talent to sow and make things with her Aunty who was her tutor. She made her first sun dress when she was 7years old so a life in the trade (amongst other things) was her destiny. Pam’s list of making costumes varies from the highly detailed and complex Queen Elizabeth 1 (perhaps best known from the Black Adder TV series) to simple men’s outfits which she told us are much easier to make.

Pam and Jan originally met and became friends 30 years ago and reunited when Pam was responsible for the costume wardrobe at Shaftesbury Arts Centre and it was at that time the opportunity came to buy the current business. Jan takes up the story of how those early days were very demanding but they survived and the business is 10 years old this month and during that period they had to move twice albeit in the same complex of buildings but with 2,000 costumes involved that is no mean feat. Pam said that Jan is the business brains of the partnership and they always get paid although she has knocked on quite a few doors to get costumes back. These wonderful costumes have been worn to parties in the Caribbean and France and of course all around the south/west of England. Shaftesbury Rotary Club are delighted that “Glad Rags” are one of our many Business Partners. You can visit their website by clicking this link.

Business Meeting – 15th August

Speaker’s Evening – 22nd August

We met at the Fleur when Margaret Hannibal from Mosaic spoke of the support she and her colleagues give to bereaved children and young people throughout Dorset.

Margaret spoke movingly about how hard some children take a death in the family. We heard of the weekend camps Mosaic hold at Swanage where bereaved youngsters meet and interact with each other while participating in a variety of activities. You can learn more about Mosaic here.
